In the following pages I examine Schopenhauer’s contribution to the debate about the extension of the moral community, concretely, to the basis principles of the animal ethics. In the first section, I describe the role of the compassion in the ethics, as propounds Schopenhauer. In the second, I focuse on the correlation ‘suffering - intellectual capacity’ as criterion to feel compassion, and I emphazise the limits of the empathy in Schopenhauer’s philosophy too. In the third section, I examine the value (...) of the compasión in connection with the denial of the will and with the pessimistic point of wiew. Finally, I stress the aspects that I consider the most important oder debatable of Schopenhauer’s position. (shrink)

One of the phenomena of our times is our low tolerance to negativity and frustration. Traditionally, philosophy has been given the task of dealing with emotions and offering suggestions to improve our world. The work of Thomas More, which gives rise to the name of the utopian genre, raises an important challenge; the philosopher Raphael Hythloday, who describes society on the island of Utopia, nevertheless rejects entering politics to attain the ideal. My intention is to address the issues raised by (...) the work at two levels: what is Hythloday’s choice and whether his and other lessons in pessimism are useful in utopian thought. (shrink)

The thesis that I develop in this paper is that there is a way of affirmation of the existence and the world in Schopenhauer, assuming no foundation, an aesthetic justification of existence or a way of life either as a tragic pessimism or pessimism of strength. This is an additional path to his basic position stated in The World as Will and Representation and is clearly in Parerga and Paralipomena, especially in «On Religion» and in «Aphorisms on the wisdom of (...) life». To develop that thesis, I analyze the concept of «need for metaphysics» and its relationship to art and to the author’s project of philosophy. (shrink)

Lower extremity non-contact soft tissue injuries are prevalent in elite futsal. The purpose of this study was to develop robust screening models based on pre-season measures obtained from questionnaires and field-based tests to prospectively predict LE-ST injuries after having applied a range of supervised Machine Learning techniques. One hundred and thirty-nine elite futsal players underwent a pre-season screening evaluation that included individual characteristics; measures related to sleep quality, athlete burnout, psychological characteristics related to sport performance and self-reported perception of chronic (...) ankle instability. A number of neuromuscular performance measures obtained through three field-based tests [isometric hip strength, dynamic postural control and lower extremity joints range of motion ] were also recorded. Injury incidence was monitored over one competitive season. There were 25 LE-ST injuries. Only those groups of measures from two of the field-based tests, as independent data sets, were able to build robust models [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve score ≥0.7] to identify elite futsal players at risk of sustaining a LE-ST injury. Unlike the measures obtained from the five questionnaires selected, the neuromuscular performance measures did build robust prediction models. The inclusion in the same data set of the measures recorded from all the questionnaires and field-based tests did not result in models with significantly higher performance scores. The model generated by the UnderBagging technique with a cost-sensitive SMO as the base classifier and using only four ROM measures reported the best prediction performance scores. The models developed might help coaches, physical trainers and medical practitioners in the decision-making process for injury prevention in futsal. (shrink)

In this paper we explore the organizational conditions underlying the emergence of organisms at the multicellular level. More specifically, we shall propose a general theoretical scheme according to which a multicellular organism is an ensemble of cells that effectively regulates its own development through collective mechanisms of control of cell differentiation and cell division processes. This theoretical result derives from the detailed study of the ontogenetic development of three multicellular systems and, in particular, of their corresponding cell-to-cell signaling networks. The (...) case study supports our claim that a specific type of functional integration among the cells of a multicellular ensemble , is required for it to qualify as a proper organism. Finally, we argue why a multicellular system exhibiting this type of functionally differentiated and integrated developmental organization becomes a self-determining collective entity and, therefore, should be considered as a second-order autonomous system. Moral Seduction Theory suggests that auditors are morally compromised by the perceived consequences of their opinions. The root of the auditing problem appears to result in an unintentional bias rather than in dishonesty. Although important accounting reforms have been taken to deal with auditors' trustworthiness, their lack of independence has not been adequately addressed. The new regulation (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) is a consequence of an incorrect understanding of the main true source of auditor's biases. We have developed a cognitive approach by (...) connecting the Throughput Model (TM) to the Moral Seduction Theory. This approach allows a better understanding of how conflicts of interest lead auditors to avoid the issuance of warning signals to stakeholders. We have tested our model by conducting a hypothetical scenario with eighty experienced auditors from international accounting firms. Our results confirm auditors' unintentional reluctance to issue qualified audit opinions alerting investors due to their fear of precipitating clients' final bankruptcy. The main implication is that, more than a regulation, effort should be made in monitoring those conflicts of interest to reduce unintentional bias. (shrink)

La vulnerabilidad narrativa, producto de la exclusión de los marcos de representación del contexto, que priva a algunos de ser vistos, escuchados y sentidos por la mayoría, implica la precariedad de amplias generaciones transformadas en “vidas fungibles”, esto es, en instrumentos vivos y animados de las máquinas de la guerra. Estos hombres y mujeres, empero, no son engranajes de la destrucción, sino seres con un nombre y una historia singular. Su capacidad de traducir narrativamente la realidad ofrece otro encuadre de (...) interpretación sobre el pasado y el futuro a partir de su llamado a una nueva vida y al fin de la violencia armada. Aquí reside la propuesta de esta contribución, en la que, usando las reflexiones de Hannah Arendt y de Judith Butler, además de una entrevista a profundidad con un excombatiente colombiano en proceso de reintegración, se advierte en la narración la respuesta a la fungibilidad —‍ la condición de existencias usufructuables, reemplazables y matables‍‍— de forma que se posibilita una vida biográfica, cargada de porvenir. This paper continues a dialogue that began with an article by Jeffrey Koperski entitled “Two Bad Ways to Attack Intelligent Design and Two Good Ones,” published in the June 2008 issue of Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science. In a response article, Christopher Pynes argues that ad hominem arguments are sometimes legitimate, especially when critiquing Intelligent Design (2012). We show that Pynes’s examples only apply to matters of testimony, not the kinds of arguments found in the best defenses of ID.

Recently, various studies have suggested that ethical leadership offers an important antecedent of fluid internal workplace relationships, which are conducive of internal social capital. Yet existing research has neither inquired into potential mediators of this relationship nor addressed the role of other distinct leadership strategies in encouraging such a valuable capital. This study advances previous research by examining if servant leadership, which seeks to put followers’ interests and needs first, can account for social capital variance within the work group, which (...) is the building block of organizations. New to the literature, we also investigate whether group citizenship behavior mediates this relationship. A sample of 352 work groups, spanning 187 hotels located in Spain, reveal that group citizenship behavior partially mediates the positive influence of servant leadership on group social capital. Managers can use these findings to lead their businesses in a more socially friendly direction while also building group social capital, which can improve the competitiveness of their work groups, and the entire business. Esta circunstancia exige la reactivación de sus derechos políticos en el seno de cualquiera de las comunidades de (...) las que forme parte, incluido un partido, lo cual lleva a un ejercicio de especificación o personalización de los mismos en la figura del afiliado. Dicha tarea, que acomete este artículo en relación con los partidos políticos españoles, permite ofrecer un criterio para valorar la cantidad de democracia interna de nuestros partidos, así como para revitalizarla. A number of recent studies have documented rapid changes in behavioural sensory acuity induced by aversive learning in the olfactory and auditory modalities. The effect of aversive learning on the discrimination of low-level features in the visual system of humans remains unclear. Here, we used a psychophysical staircase procedure to estimate discrimination thresholds for oriented grating stimuli, before and after differential aversive learning. We discovered that when a target grating orientation was conditioned with an aversive loud noise, it subsequently led (...) to an improvement of discrimination acuity in nearly all subjects. However, no such change was observed in a control group conditioned to an orientation shifted by ±90° from the target. Our findings cannot be explained by contextual learning or sensitisation factors. The results converge with those reported in the olfactory modality and provide further evidence that early sensory systems can be rapidly modified by recently experienced reinforcement histories. Unlike the economistic understanding of Marxian theory of value and its resulting reduction to the theoretical level of classical political economy, this paper analyzes its essential critical dimension and the fundamental differences that draw it apart from classical theories of value. It emphasizes that the main objective of Marx’ theoretical exposition is to show the specific social character of value, which takes place through a complete theoretical redefinition of the economic categories. This makes clear that the Marxian critique of political (...) economy is derived from the exposition of the categories, whereby the social relations that set up the basis of the capitalist system are revealed. La ilusión de profundidad explicativa (ipe) es uno de los fenómenos que ha despertado gran interés en la ciencia cognitiva en los últimos veinte años. Sucede cuando la persona cree poder explicar un fenómeno mejor de lo que realmente puede explicarlo. A continuación, se hará una reconstrucción histórica de los estudios de la IPE a lo largo de las últimas décadas, dando cuenta de su actualidad e importancia. Primero se presentarán los antecedentes y los estudios fundantes de este tema de (...) investigación. A continuación, se expondrán las investigaciones iniciales (años 2002-2015), y la manera como prosiguió la indagación con cuestionamientos y soluciones a la IPE (años 2016-2021). Finalmente, se analizará la relación entre la ipe, las fake news y el internet. (shrink)

Este artículo aporta una clarificación sobre lo que sí podemos decir de la relación entre este mundo y el futuro anunciado por la esperanza cristiana (escatología). La iluminación según la sagrada Escritura de la recíproca interdependencia y complementariedad entre el futuro intrahistórico y el metahistórico, permite encontrar pautas teórico-prácticas de actuación. Una humanidad nueva conduce a forjar un mundo según el plan de Dios, un mundo donde ha de reinar la paz y la justicia. El futuro es la ciudad de (...) la Paz; construirla es tarea de todos. En esta hora de la historia, la mujer está dando una aportación digna de consideración. El sueño de futuro que alimenta el Apocalipsis no es una ilusión, pues se está gestando ya en lo escondido de la historia. (shrink)

Este trabajo parte de la premisa de que, en El arco y la lira, Octavio Paz hace una reflexión acerca del lenguaje poético que se aproxima en diversos aspectos a la hermenéutica de Hans-George Gadamer. En ambos autores encontramos la idea de que la poesía es un lenguaje originario que, por su carácter creador, nos separa de las relaciones habituales del mundo, al mismo tiempo que nos conecta con la tradición. La poesía deviene, así, como una experiencia de origen y (...) de pertenencia: nos lleva a lo que nunca antes habíamos contemplado (experiencia de la otredad y de lo indeterminado), pero también nos conecta con la historia y con la tradición que está presente en toda lengua. Así, el propósito de este trabajo es mostrar los puntos de encuentro entre ambos autores, que, desde puntos de partida muy diferentes, han llegado a planteamientos bastante compatibles entre sí, lo cual se explica, en buena medida, por el hecho de que ambos han superado la visión del lenguaje como medio y han afirmado la esencia lingüística de la poesía. La tesis que se propone en este artículo es que, si existe el perdón, este siempre implica el trabajo de la memoria. Para llevar a cabo este propósito y reflexionar sobre las posibilidades del perdón en la realidad colombiana, tomaremos como base los planteamientos del filósofo francés Paul Ricoeur de la memoria, el perdón, la identidad, el sí mismo y la narración. Con Ricoeur, podemos afirmar que en el testimonio de las víctimas se abre el horizonte de la relación entre (...) memoria y perdón, porque la reconstrucción de los hechos a través del relato abre una dialéctica entre lo que ha marcado la identidad y las variaciones y proyecciones de dicha identidad. Narrar, además, es una manera de recuperar el _ser capaz _que ha sido vulnerado a través de la falta. Para esto, sin embargo, el testimonio tiene unas condiciones mínimas: que la víctima pueda contar su historia, que haya alguien dispuesto a escuchar y que se pueda recuperar la verdad de los hechos a través de procesos de justicia y reparación. Estas condiciones mínimas nos permitirán analizar, según algunos testimonios de diferentes víctimas, hasta qué punto es factible hablar de perdón en el conflicto armado colombiano. Al final, concluimos que el perdón implica procesos de reparación y justicia, y que solo surge al margen de estos cuando la víctima decide resignificar su pasado doloroso por un ideal ético de felicidad que le permite privilegiar su realización ante la afrenta recibida. Se acercaba el Congreso Mundial de Filosofía del Derecho, que iba a celebrarse en Granada en mayo de 2005, y parecía una buena idea ofrecer un catálogo que incluyera noticia de todas las publicaciones contenidas en la revista desde su aparición, en 1961 hasta la fecha (por entonces, 2004)….

I defend a metalinguistic account of Mates's puzzle: sentences where synonymous expressions cannot be substituted salva veritate. If Andrea thinks that attorneys are different from lawyers, and she thinks that Fiona is the former but not the latter, we may hesitate to substitute ‘lawyer’ for ‘attorney’ in ‘Andrea believes that Fiona is an attorney’, even though ‘lawyer’ and ‘attorney’ are synonymous. I argue that these sentences report de re beliefs about linguistic expressions, thereby blocking such substitutions, and I offer a (...) compositional derivation of their meaning. (shrink)

ABSTRACT Recently, the hypothesis that purely evaluative disputes are metalinguistic negotiations has gained traction. I resist a strong version of that hypothesis, and argue that some of those disputes are not metalinguistic negotiations. To defend that claim, I argue that metalinguistic negotiations have three linguistic properties that some purely evaluative disputes lack. First, in a metalinguistic negotiation it is felicitous to embed the dispute-initial statement under the subjective attitude verb consider; second, a speaker can reply to that initial statement by (...) using a metalinguistic comparative; and, third, such negotiations address metalinguistic questions under discussion. Some purely evaluative disputes lack these properties, which suggests that they are not metalinguistic negotiations. (shrink)

The moral ideology of banking and insurance employees in Spain was examined along with supervisor role modeling and ethics-related policies and procedures for their association with ethical behavioral intent. In addition to main effects, we found evidence supporting that the person–situation interactionist perspective in supervisor role modeling had a stronger positive relationship with ethical intention among employees with relativist moral ideology. Also as hypothesized, formal ethical polices and procedures were positively related to ethical intention among those with universal beliefs, but (...) the relationship was much weaker among relativists. Thus, firms wishing to optimally promote ethical attitudes and behavior must tailor their organization-based initiatives to the individual characteristics of their employees. (shrink)

One of the most controversial and currently developed lines of research in philosophy of biology is that in which philosophers investigate pre-Darwinian assumptions that would still be present at the base of other philosophical sub-disciplines, such as ethics, epistemology, philosophy of language, etc. This type of inquiry, which I will call here “meta-philosophical interrogation,” can be thought as a complementary approach to the epistemological one, which allows us to broaden the critical approach of the discipline in question. The objective of (...) this article will be to analyze the characteristics of the “meta-philosophical interrogation” and to argue about its legitimacy as a way of inquiry proper to the philosophy of biology.
